Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong emerged winner of chairmanship race
in the Volta region despite opposition from some party members.
The embattled former Mp for Akan constituency pulled a
surprise at the just ended elections after clocking 175 out of 297 votes to lead
the other four candidates in the race.
Kwadwo Gyapong had a rather tough time in the contest as his
candidature was under stern scrutiny even by some members of his constituency.
He was accused of being a traitor and an arrogant leader by a group that called
itself concerned card bearers of the party. The group also went ahead to incite
delegates not to give him the nod.
The impact of the group’s campaign nearly compelled him to
withdraw from the race at the eleventh hour. With that cramp of hope and supports
from his sympathisers he finally sailed through. He polled 176 as against his
closest contender Mawutor Agbavitor, who got 101 votes. Other contenders
include Dr. Kwame Ampofo, 5votes, Cpt George Nfodjo 6votes, and Kosi Kedem
1vote.
Some delegates who spoke to citifmonline after the elections
which was held in Ho yesterday say they least expected his outstanding
performance in the race particularly after being strongly opposed by some
delegates. one of the delegates said ''I think his victory was divine because
he even had oppositions from his backyard''
The elected chairman who felt his victory was enough to
vindicate and console him simply thanked delegates for the responsibility
entrusted on him to lead the region.
