World precarious day was observed
in Ho with Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) calling on
organisations especially private owned radio stations in the region to desist
from flouting the labour law by paying workers below the national minimum wage.
The Volta
regional officer of ICU Samuel Ananga noted that
most companies especially media houses in the region pay their workers
below
the national minimum wage even after engaging them beyond the daily
working
limit of eight hours. He said litany of cases have been reported to him
by some
of these workers who are not even paid their salaries for months. According to him people's passion and desperation to work have forced
them to endure such unfair treatments from employers. He however
advised prospective job seekers to insist on their right and not be
exploited by some unscrupulous business owners.
He made the call at a press
conference held in ho yesterday to mark the maiden world precarious workers day
.The essence of the day was to bring to the attention of the government,
employers, civil society organizations, advocates of justice and equality,
workers and the public the injustice and deprivation being meted out to this
class of workers.
Precarious work, he explained, included on site
contracting of labour, hiring of labour through agencies or brokers,
outsourcing of labour, contractualization of labour, casualization of labour
and all forms of employment that are not permanent or direct.Volta region
in recent years have seen the proliferation of radio stations with
seven currently operating in Ho the regional capital. employees of most
of these radio stations confirmed to citinews that even though they work
more than 8 hours a day, their employers pay them below the national
daily minimum wage.
