Students of Ho polytechnic yesterday went to the polls
to elect new executives of the students representative council. An election held
at the forecourt of the school’s library saw over 1840 students participating.
Ahead of the elections, students say the poor state of
security on campus is their most pressing concern, which they want the next SRC
leadership to focus attention and resources on addressing, in collaboration
with the school authorities.
The students want aspiring SRC executives to come up
with clear blue prints on how to make the campus much safer, especially during
the night, in order to earn their votes. In a poll conducted by the SRC
electoral commission involving over 1840, almost half of the respondents (48.1
percent) mentioned security as the major concern they want the incoming SRC
executives to invest energy in tackling head on. Concerns were also raised
about frequent power outages on campus especially at night and sanitation on
campus, which not only worsens the security situation, but also impedes
academic work.
The intense anxiety about poor security on campus from
the students comes on the back of a couple of criminal incidents that occurred,
including raping of some ladies, and the stabbing of some male student to
extort them of their valuables. Other concerns that came up strongly in the
poll results which the students wanted the incoming SRC leadership to address
swiftly were increased SRC dues, poor academic facilities, unavailable wireless
internet connectivity, among others. About 13 aspirants are vying for five SRC
executive positions with the keenest competition being that of the race for the
presidency, involving 3 students, all males.
The following were the outcome of the polls which
ended exactly 6pm. Presidency; Master Franline Décor With 822 Votes,Financial Officer;
Master Daniel Equagooo With 912 Votes,Gnups; Master Gilbert Nukomako With 580
Votes,Women Commissioner; Miss Sandra Atutsey With 1132,Secretary; Miss Narh
Charity With 1584
According to
the chairman of the electoral commission Master Samuel Dzoboku, the elections
went on smoothly, fairly and peacefully without any hindrances.
