Past
students of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana popularly known as
the ‘’old vandals’’, spearheaded the National Sanitation Day in Volta region.
The old
vandals in the early hours of Saturday de-silted major drains and cleared weeds
and rubbish in the Volta regional capital. Amidst chanting and drumming smeared
with their typical “morale” the vandals attracted many residents who joined to
actively participate in the exercise.
The cleanup
exercise heralded the inauguration of the 7th Biennial National
Delegate Congress of the Association ongoing in Ho. This year’s congress is
under the theme; “Human Rights; a catalyst for Ghana’s development, the role of
a true Vandal”. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the outgone National
President of the Old Vandals Association Alhaji Razak El-Alawa noted that the
purpose of encouraging Alumni Association of any institution is to help bring
together past students to support their alma mater.
“Alumni are
supposed to raise funds and support their colleges and universities in their
infrastructural development. The funding of projects can come from personal
contributions of the alumni or soliciting for such funds from outside,
especially from corporate organizations” he said.
He therefore
called on all Old Vandals to continue to champion the welfare of the
commonwealth hall and support the activities of the Old Vandals Association.
