Hard on the heels of the poor
reading and comprehension skills of our children in schools, the Ghana Association
Of Teachers’ of English (GATE) attributes poor teacher students ratio as being
one of the factors contributing to the daunting trend.
The National Secretary of the Ghana
Association Of Teachers’ of English Mr Charles Wese Kufia said although schools
are still battling with inadequate furniture, classroom blocks and low
motivation of teachers, poor teacher to student ratio remains the outstanding
factor contributing to the abysmal performance of students in the country. He said
the disheartening ratios especially that of English teachers are having
rippling effects on the reading and comprehension skills of students. Mr
Charles wese kufia said the few English teachers in the system were often seen grabbling for schools in the urban areas making the situation more pronounced
in the rural areas.
He revealed this at a five day delegates’
conference for members of the association which is being held in Ho, the Volta
regional capital. The 15th delegates conference is under the theme
‘’ addressing the fall of students’ academic performance, the roles of the
learner and the English language teacher’’.
