Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you
want to test a man's character, give him power.
Abraham Lincoln in his saying did not only give
chance to citizens who elect their leaders into offices to observe their character
but also threw a challenge to the leaders to live up to expectation.
A student just as any other politician move from
the board room or class room onto the public microscope just at the moment he stands
to be elected as a leader. He is now left in the mercies of the limelight
formed by rays from eyes of observers. Nothing of his becomes confidential; all cardboard containing his skeletons would be left ajar.
Over the years my premier institution, Ho
Polytechnic, has passed through the hands of different caliber of leaders. I don’t
want to state the types because I might end up being cautioned by his Excellency
John Evans Atta Mills to stop the habit of borrowing irrelevant words.
Some had
their victory as a pyrrhic victory so they need to revive their damaged
accounts whiles others see it as a opportunity of making money. Nevertheless as
some try to live up to expectation indefatigably, their own comrades soil their
efforts.
Undeniably, SRC week celebration in Ho
Polytechnic is always a moment for unity among students not exiting its
entertaining aspect. One moment that gladdens
me most is how our true culture is being displaced when we dress in old school attires;
the wearing of opposite sex‘s outfits, the food bazaar, the games, oh so
awesome!! All these events take place in the second semester of every academic
year. This year’s second semester seems
to have been fleeing away too quickly but each time I visit the academic calendar,
nothing of such program seem to be visible ,even if my eyes couldn’t see it,
definitely my magnifying glass wouldn’t have disappointed me.
A vast silence reigned over the campus; the land itself
is desolation, lifeless, without excitement, so lone and dull that the spirit
is not even that of silence.
What irritates most is that after paying SRC dues,
they still organize programs of exorbitant gate fees which don’t come on
successful. It is either the performing artists fail to show up for the show or
there is low patronage all due to poor organization.
Frustrations have affected my mind just as the
several magnitude of pressure of deep water that affects the body of a diver. It
crushed me with the weight of unending vastness and unalterable decree.
Just at the moment of the recesses of my mind the
reality dawned on me prompting me to release my sentiments on this paper just
as the juice being squeezed from the fell mango from the rector’s mango tree.
It is a painful truth that the scandal that
besieged the school in the matter of our students sexually abusing some females
from the public during the floating day of last year’s week celebration is a
big blow against the vow of discipline in the school. Someone should tell me if
our annual week celebration has been banned as a result of such accidence? If no,
then why was it not celebrated this year? And if yes, why won’t just cancel the
floating aspect of it?
All men dream but not equally ,those who dream by
night in the dusty recesses of their minds awake in the day to find out it
yours vanity; but dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they act their
dream with open eyes to make it happen so said the American president TE Lawrence
and I paraphrased.
This off course is not in the case of my school because,
our leaders organize general assembly (GA) in the night while in the dusty
recesses of students mind the make self-centered decisions. There are daily
reports of fund mismanagement but what surprises me most is the presence of
some accountancy students there who fail to apply their audit lessons. Some complain
of the fund allocation not being sufficient, but believe me nothing is too
small unless one is not compassionate enough to help; our greatest outdoor
program shouldn’t have been undermined as such.
I stand to be corrected, is the WOCOM/GNUPS week celebration
a replacement for the SRC week celebration? If so then that aim has not been
met at all. Talking of this celebration
raises eyebrows on the issue of our beauty queens, what is the essence? To my
best of knowledge beauty pageant shows are organized to identify outstanding
ladies or gentlemen who intend uses their affluence to help the society by
undertaking some humanitarian projects. More often than not we crown queen A,B and
C without realizing a speck of impact they bring in the society. Why don’t we
invest such funds into developmental projects in the school? All apologies to lovers of beauty pageant shows
and our beauty queens. Am just being
forced to take such a stern priority. A lot has really happened which my okro
mouth can’t say it all; collection of events dramatic and not so dramatic with
some coming with mixed bag of regrets for taking some decisions. I challenge
you to compare the works of the present administration to that of the former
and put your result in the diaries of your mind in making some decisions.
But before I take leave of you, I want to remind
you that we have new ones who would be taking over, never set your eyes off
them. And to the new leaders, let me remind you that prosperity do best to
discover vice whiles adversity do well to discover virtue; a true leader should
be measured by the wealth of his virtue not by the virtue of his wealth.
I pause here with my question not answered; will
there ever be SRC week celebration?
