The idea of the
ongoing biometric registration exercise assumed its importance due to the quest
to eliminate the many ghost names in the
voters register and to avoid double voting when electing presidential
and parliamentary candidates in the country.
However several incidents, including bloody
attacks, intimidation from some security services and matzo men characterized the
opening of biometric voter registration which started on Saturday.
Aside the
ignorance of some citizen on this exercise, technical hitches is some of the challenges
which cannot be left out of factors propelling these undesired situations. There
were Mal functioning of printers and laptops and worse of all inability of thumbprints
to connect the computers.
Some participants
complained of the slow nature of the registration process saying officials at
the registration centers spend too much time registering an individual. Some prospective
applicants concluded that the officials registering them were not welled
trained and lack experience.
Undoubtedly attempt
from minors and non-Ghanians’ to register were also encountered.
