UHAS MATRICULATES FIRST BATCH OF STUDENTS FOR ITS PERMANENT CAMPUS




The first batch of students at the permanent campus of the University Health and Allied Sciences were on Saturday matriculated into the various faculties and departments of the school in Ho.

In all 829 students out of the 4124 applicants have been officially initiated into the University for the 2015/2016 academic year to pursue various degree programs in Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, Midwifery, Nursing, Medicine, Physician Assistantship, Physiotherapy as well as Speech and Language Therapy .


Established in 2012 UHAS is the first publicly-funded state university in the Volta region with sole aim of becoming a leading health institution in Ghana.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Newton Fred Binka said the number of prospective applicants to the University has sharply shot up over the few years of its existence.

“Over the years the university has a seen a steady but huge increase in the number of applicants who wish pursue their dreams of becoming health professionals. Last year we received 2011 applications for the 2014/2015 academic year and we were only able to offer places and enrolled 458 students. This year the total number of applicants have doubled. We had 4124 applications to which 829 have been enrolled” he said.

The University currently operates five schools namely, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Medicine, School of Public Health and School of Allied Health Sciences. Others yet to be established are; School of Pharmacy, School of Sports and Exercise Medicine, School of Dentistry, Institute of Medical Education and Institute of Traditional and Alternate Medicine.
