The
Volta Regional Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority has
cautioned health service providers in the region to desist from unduly passing
on charges to NHIS subscribers visiting facilities.
In
an exclusive interview with KINGNOBERT'S DIARIES, the Regional Public Relations Officer of
the scheme Charles Agbesi said his attention was drawn to an unwarranted
development at health facilities in the region where National Health Insurance
subscribers visiting the facilities are being charged an “energy fund” to
ostensibly bear the cost of energy consumption at the facilities.
He said as some hospitals are not dispensing drugs to patients faulting the NHIS for delays in reimbursement of funds, others allegedly charge fees ranging from GH5 to GH15 before treating them and in most cases turn away clients who fail to pay the charges.

Describing
the situation as unjustifiable, Charles Agbesi disclosed that most health
facilities in the region have been paid four months arrears of their claims.
‘’We
want to assure the public that NHIS has received funds which we have
transferred to our district offices for the payment of four(4) months arrears
to our subscribers and as we speak, I can confirm that most health facilities
have been paid up to December last year and others are being processed to
receive their payments’’ he said
Adding
‘’we think it is not in place to continue charging our subscribers’’.
He
has however appealed to service providers in the region to desist from the act and
continue to collaborate with the NHIS to ensure quality health delivery in the
region.
