The Ghana National
Union of Polytechnic Students local Representative in Ho Polytechnic Gilbert
Nukomeko tenders his resignation following what he said was the failure of
the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council to defend the
constitution of GNUPS and fight for the rights of students on campus.
His resignation
followed an earlier decision by the school’s management to turn down the school’s
right to host this year’s national seat of GNUPS on their campus after an
impasse between management and GNUPS executives over the eligibility of one of
the candidates in the race.
In a letter dated on the 20th May and submitted
to the Judicial Committee of the SRC, the GNUPS Rep said SRC acted in bad faith
by failing to insist on the right of the students when it was patently
infringed on.
“I find my continuous
stay in office meaningless if my involvement cannot translate into restoring an
academic atmosphere which is receptive of students’ grievances and responsive
to the plight of students; with apology I would not want to continue throwing my
lot with a failing team’’ it stated.
He however dissociated
himself from actions of the SRC to further ‘betray’ the trust of the students
by “being in bed with the oppressors”.
