The Volta regional chapter of Teacher Trainees Association
of Ghana has expressed disappointment on what they call a plot by the Volta
regional branch of the Conference of Principal of Teacher Training Colleges
(PRINCOF) to throw into disarray a planned demonstration yesterday in Ho.
The planned nationwide demonstration was intended to be
executed on Monday 24th March, 2014 to express their protest against
the scrubbing off of their allowance.
Addressing the press, the Volta Regional President of TTAG, Shittie
Prosper said they were taken aback by the sudden turn of events not to allow
trainees leave their respective colleges to demonstrate after the financial
commitment they made and the approval they received from the national chair
person of PRINCOF. He said although members were more than ready to troop the
street, authorities in the colleges prevented their students from leaving the
campus and threatened to sanction students that would go against their
directives. The strict directives according to Master Shittie Prosper
questioned its appropriateness in a tertiary institution. He said despite all efforts to thwart their
intended demonstration, they would still go ahead and present their petitions
to the regional minister.
Government has scrubbed the allowances paid to teacher trainees
and replaced it with loans as well as feeding fees for trainees. But the
trainees believe this action by government is an affront to quality teacher
education. Mohammed Amin Mansiru the national president of teacher trainees
association of Ghana stated in a communiqué that about forty percent (40%) of
level 100 students are not able to return to college and even those who
reported were sent home because they could not pay the exorbitant feeding fees.
He therefore petitioned the president, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to
restore the allowances for the trainees immediately.
