Akome
secondary technical school in the Ho west district of the Volta region is in a
deplorable state, making teaching and learning very challenging for students
and teachers.
The
school of a population of over 500 lacks number of facilities such as accommodation for
students and teachers, dining hall, potable water and laboratory.
Madam
Edna Azameti who took over office barely few days noted the absence of such
basic amenities has become an affront to effective teaching and learning in the
school. She cited a case where female students in the dilapidated dormitory
sleep 10 in each of the single rooms with the house mistress sharing one of the
rooms with them. She said the situation gets worse in the male dormitory as the
male students are overcrowded with their trunks and chop box occupying the same
space. Madam Azameti said though the school runs a course in home economics,
there is no department to have teachers adequately equipped to train the
students. Some teachers who shared their challenges disclosed government was
carrying out three projects in the school. A 6-unit classroom block, an
administration block and a 2 storey dormitory for the boys were to be
constructed but have been abandoned for so many years. The school prefects of
Akome Secondary Technical School Master Kedze Philp and Miss Amedey Mercy said,
for fear of their lives teachers always close down the school whenever it is
about raining. The fear that that the dilapidated mud classroom block might
collapse during the rains compels teachers to close down the school each time
is about raining and this according to the prefects affects academic works.
The
headmistress on behalf of the school pleaded with government to expedite
actions to complete these projects.
These
challenges came to light when a delegation from Friends Of John Tumaku And
Associate a non governmental organization committed to creating educational and
social needs of children in the Volta region donated a set of text books to the
school. The founder and president of the group Mr John tumaku said there was a
growing concern about the falling standards of education in the region and that
there was the need to do more to salvage the situation. He said Friends Of John
Tumaku and associate was committed to creating educational and social
development opportunities for children in selected deprived communities in the region
and called on well wishers to join hands to push this agenda. He pleaded with the teachers to wholeheartedly sacrifice in
making sure that the children have the necessary support to enable them have
the best to become responsible citizens.
